PERANAKAN BEADWORK

Peranakan beadwork is a traditional craft that uses colourful glass and metal beads. The beaded craft embodies the meticulousness, resilience and the character of the individual who crafted it. The craft also served as a test for a good daughter-in-law in the past.

Women's footwear and purses were some commonly used beadwork items, but the most popular beadwork accessory is the kasut manek.

PERANAKAN EMBROIDERY

Peranakan embroidery is a traditional craft that involves many different materials, motifs and techniques. The designs and symbols used in embroidery convey auspicious meanings in Peranakan culture. Representing the Peranakan culture’s diversity, influences for different designs come from European, Malay, Chinese and Western culture.

Peranakan embroidery is heavily used in the Nyonya kebaya, the traditional Peranakan costume for the Nyonyas (Peranakan females).
